The cold night on beach
despite the advice while life
other taking shape
29 Apr 2016
On the silver tray
giving sun the moon goodness
while the first frost sets
28 Apr 2016
Offered big help
disrespect in the process
youth in the jungle
27 Apr 2016
Turned around in twists
like between what happened and
never will be there
26 Apr 2016
On other fence side
there are no differences
life goes in spiral
25 Apr 2016
Found that what was lost
the two ravens twist their heads
in new old chapter
24 Apr 2016
When everyone down
after the full moon soak souls
the sleep sneak steal lives
22 Apr 2016
Between all aspects
suspended but actively
pulling all their ends
20 Apr 2016
I don't know what is
what to expect and what not
and whatever be
19 Apr 2016
The awaiting day
something before and between
when all can happen
18 Apr 2016
The twist of our fates
brings everything together
and mix with all lives
17 Apr 2016
Slowing down after
the craziness of the trip
when things happened strong
16 Apr 2016
The Stranglers of times
in a big round coast trip roll
and with the young bee
13 Apr 2016
The spiral of lost
with the bracelet of unknown
where heading round south
12 Apr 2016
The verge of being
to feel good or bad in space
but temporarily
11 Apr 2016
After twenty five
whole long years not seeing them
first meeting in time
10 Apr 2016
Between Ice and Fire
there is always that hunting
despite tiredness
09 Apr 2016
The long and slow like
twisted spaghetti of life
with conversation
08 Apr 2016
Judgments issued swift
light as good life of health is
spreading with love joy
07 Apr 2016
The bad news from far
the bar stretch to nowhere known
the tomorrows mist
06 Apr 2016
The harvest in full
with wine juice splashing around
to next new vintage
05 Apr 2016
Where is that sudden
crowd that is coming forward
in the day between
04 Apr 2016
Pressing Pinot Gris
in the wide disillusion
of season tough end
03 Apr 2016
When warmth mixed with cold
the longest day of the year
winter is coming
02 Apr 2016
With that quietness
through the murmur of the rain
the night won't sleep deep
01 Apr 2016
Twisted to new times
with many questions of Why
year sprang wide ahead

What is haikuary?

The term 'haikuary' is a blend of the words 'haiku' and 'diary'. Haiku is a short form of poetry, originating in Japan a few centuries ago.

Haiku normally contain 3 lines totalling 17 syllables, in the order of 5 / 7 / 5

Matsuo Basho, Japan's most famous writer of haiku, will illustrate the form:

Wrapping dumplings in
bamboo leaves, with one finger

she tidies her hair

A simple and beautiful glimpse into a flake of his life.

Here it is again, broken down:

Wrapp-ing dump-lings in (5 syllables)
bam-boo leaves, with one fin-ger
(7 syllables)
she tid-ies her hair
(5 syllables)

Why did I do it?

I was sitting with a friend in a Japanese restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand. Whilst waiting for our food I wrote a haiku on a paper placemat. It was something about noodles jumping into my belly and that we shall be good friends.

My friend suggested that this kind of simple poetry would benefit the children in her class and help them reflect on their day-to-day lives. I agreed and decided to create something online that would enable that, for everyone.

Taking time to reflect on the tiny and often forgotten moments in our daily lives can be cathartic and it's amazing what you can capture when limited to just 17 syllables; it focuses the mind.

But haikuary is not about Poking and 'I Like This!' so feel free to switch on 'private mode' (in your settings area) and keep your writings personal, or share them with the community and inspire others.

Why the invitations?

This was never going to be a giant project, and I wanted to ensure that the people creating their daily haiku were here for the right reason; to take time out, to reflect. I believe that word of mouth, friends inviting friends, tends to be the best way of achieving this.

It also makes it a little special.

And it's yours

Whilst this is a great place to write and centralise your haikuary from anywhere you have an internet connection, you should ideally download your writings as often as possible.

I will do my best to ensure your haikuary entries are safe, but we all know how technology can let us down. Personally, I download my haikuary at least once a week. Go to the menu inside your account (top right hand corner) and select Download as PDF - I have designed it to look like an old book.

Thanks for sharing

I hope you enjoy adding to your haikuary every day. If you think you know someone who may also enjoy taking a small amount of time every day to create their own, send them an invite (it's in the menu at the top right corner, when you're logged in)

If you have any suggestions as to how I could improve things, do get in touch.

in love,
Gavin Bloemen
